Two tips for your first bathroom remodelling project

Here are two tips for your first bathroom remodelling project.

Choose and order your bathroom accessories early on in the project

For many people who remodel their bathrooms, bathroom accessories are an afterthought that they only start shopping for either at the very end of their projects or shortly after they're finished. However, it's best to choose and order your bathroom accessories early on in your remodelling project if you can.

The reason for this is that even though they're relatively small, common bathroom accessories like toilet tissue holders, towel rails and shaving mirrors will collectively have a big impact on the aesthetics of the space. Because of this, it's important to make sure that the accessories you buy for the new bathroom are proportionate to, and complement the colour and design of its biggest features (such as the bathroom suite). It's not always possible to tell if some accessories will work with the large bathroom features you're having fitted until you see them all together in person, side-by-side.

Choosing them early on (and returning and swapping any accessories that turn out to be unsuitable) will not only mean that every aspect of the bathroom will be fully completed by the time the remodelling contractor leaves but also this professional will be able to fit any accessories that are wall-mounted for you and do this task properly. This is important as if, for example, you drill into your new bathroom wall tiles or painted walls rather clumsily, you might create big holes in the tiles or plaster that you have to try to patch up.

Ask the contractor to do the tiling and painting before mounting the bathroom accessories

You should tell the contractor to complete the tiling and painting of the bathroom before they fit any of the semi-permanent bathroom accessories. The reason for this is that the application of tiles and paint can get messy and it could slow the contractor down if they have to, for example, apply the grout to the tiles near the new towel rail very cautiously, to avoid splattering grout onto the rail.

Likewise, if you have them put up a wall-mounted toilet tissue holder before doing this other work, they'll have to spend several minutes painstakingly covering its components with masking tape before they can paint around it, and the area to which it is directly attached will remain unpainted (which could be an issue if you ever want to relocate this accessory). As such, these accessories should only be fitted after all of the bathroom's new tiles and paint have been added.
