Simple Steps to Follow When Cleaning Caravan Awnings

One of the greatest additions you can consider for your home or motorhome is caravan awnings. They offer shading and an attractive complement to the exterior of your home or motorhome. So, regardless of the weather condition, you will enjoy some comfy space.

Unfortunately, caravan awnings become dirty over time. Other than accumulating dust, they can get stained by bird droppings, fungus and mildew. Grime and other forms of dirt can also accumulate, depending on the environment the awnings are exposed to. Once this occurs, the attractive awning you had becomes unrecognisable. The fabric also weakens, and if the awning isn't cleaned, it will disintegrate fast. For this reason, it is essential to clean your awning often. Below are easy guidelines you should consider the next time you need to clean your caravan awnings.

Set up the awning

It is impossible to clean a caravan awning while it's folded. Other than failing to remove the dirt and grime, the water will not drain properly, and this will lead to the growth of fungi and mould on the caravan material. So, set the awning up and ensure the material spreads properly and that it's entirely exposed. Although the awnings might be waterproof, you cannot afford to let water or other fluids stagnate on the awning – they should be dried off or wiped clean right away. The best way to dry up the awning is to expose it to the sun, so choose your cleaning day wisely.

If you cannot reach the awning, consider using an appropriately sized ladder to reach it. Make sure it's well-positioned and that the feet are locked into place via a safety mechanism. This will keep you safe while you are up there, cleaning the awning.

Wash the awning

To wash the awning, you need some simple cleaning tools – water, awning cleaner, soft cloth, and brush. Also, set up a garden hose to get a sufficient supply of water. Pour some water into a bucket and add the cleaner as per the instructions. You may also use mild laundry soap.

Wet down a part of the awning using the garden hose and then scrub using a brush and soapy solution. A circular motion is ideal since it makes it easy to work the soapy solution into the fabric. Remember to clean the awning in bits instead of applying the soapy solution on the entire awning; it might dry up before you get to scrub it.

Finally, rinse with clean water from the hose and let the awning dry while it's still set up.
